What Makes a Great Summer Camp Experience for Children?

June 25, 20265 min read

When parents begin searching for a summer camp, it's natural to focus on the activities. We look at the timetable, the themes, the crafts, the games, and the adventures on offer. Will there be STEM challenges? Outdoor play? Creative projects? Treasure hunts? Messy play?

While activities certainly matter, they are not what children remember most, nor are they what have the greatest impact on their development.

The real value of a summer camp lies in the experiences children have while participating in those activities. It lies in the friendships they build, the confidence they gain, the challenges they overcome, and the opportunities they have to discover what they are capable of. The best summer camps don't simply keep children busy. They create environments where children can grow.

At Discovery Playtime, this understanding shapes everything we do.

Why We Invest in Continuous Learning

One of the things that often surprises parents is how much training and professional development happens behind the scenes.

Recently, I travelled to Italy to continue my studies in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a field focused on communication, learning, behaviour, and the way people make sense of the world around them.

At first glance, that may seem far removed from a children's summer camp. In reality, it has everything to do with it.

Children are constantly learning about themselves through the experiences they have and the interactions they share with the adults around them. Every conversation, every challenge, every success, and every setback contributes to the beliefs they develop about who they are and what they can achieve.

The more we understand communication, confidence, emotional regulation, and human behaviour, the better we can support children in meaningful ways.

That learning doesn't stay in a notebook or training room. It becomes part of how we design activities, train our staff, support children, and create experiences that help children thrive.

Children Communicate Through More Than Words

One of the most valuable lessons from working with children over the years is that communication is about far more than what is said.

Children communicate through their body language, facial expressions, energy levels, behaviour, and play. Sometimes a child who appears withdrawn is feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes a child who is struggling to engage simply needs a little reassurance. Sometimes a child who appears disruptive is communicating frustration, uncertainty, or a need for connection.

Understanding these signals allows camp leaders to respond with empathy and curiosity rather than assumptions.

When children feel understood, they are more likely to participate, build relationships, take healthy risks, and engage with new experiences. This creates a positive cycle where confidence continues to grow throughout the week.

Confidence Is Built Through Experiences

Confidence is often misunderstood. Many people think confidence comes from praise or encouragement alone.

In reality, confidence is built through experience.

A child becomes confident when they successfully navigate challenges, solve problems, make decisions, and discover that they are capable of more than they previously believed.

At our Summer Camps, confidence develops naturally through play.

When a child designs an invention from recycled materials, builds a structure with loose parts, leads a team challenge, creates a story, solves a problem, or shares an idea with others, they are building much more than a project.

They are building belief in themselves.

These moments may seem small from an adult perspective, but they can have a lasting impact on how children see themselves and approach future challenges.

The Power of Curiosity and Imagination

One of the most important ingredients in childhood is curiosity.

Children are naturally curious. They want to explore, experiment, ask questions, and discover how things work. Unfortunately, many opportunities for open-ended exploration become limited as children grow older.

This is why play remains such a powerful tool for learning and development.

When children are given materials without instructions, challenges without obvious solutions, and opportunities to create something entirely their own, they begin to think differently. They become problem-solvers, innovators, creators, and explorers.

Whether they are searching for treasure, designing a spaceship, building an invention, creating a story, or collaborating with friends, they are developing skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

Creativity, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and resilience all grow through these experiences.

Social Skills Matter More Than Ever

Summer camps also provide something many children need more of: opportunities to develop social confidence.

Children learn how to introduce themselves, join a group, share ideas, negotiate rules, solve disagreements, and work collaboratively towards a common goal.

These social experiences are not separate from learning. They are some of the most important learning experiences children can have.

Through play, children practise empathy, communication, cooperation, leadership, listening, flexibility, and emotional regulation.

These skills support success not only at camp but also in school, friendships, family relationships, and future workplaces.

More Than Entertainment

At Discovery Playtime, we believe children deserve more than entertainment.

They deserve experiences that challenge them, inspire them, encourage them to think creatively, and help them discover their strengths.

Every activity we design has a deeper purpose. Behind the fun, there are opportunities for communication, confidence-building, creativity, problem-solving, emotional development, and connection.

Children may come to camp excited about pirates, superheroes, inventing, dinosaurs, or space adventures. They leave with much more than memories.

They leave with new friendships, new skills, new experiences, and often a stronger belief in themselves.
